For matters concerning sustainable use of water...  AE3 wants to promote sustainable use of water, which does not just mean that we have to be careful with drinking water. For the future or our planet, with its billions of human users and its serious loss of plant and animal species, more commitment is required of water users, both individuals and companies. To go short, sustainable use of water can be seen as a set of smart actions that create short water circuits, that do not waste valuable resources, and that offer a multiple use of water systems for the public interest. AE3 offers solutions for optimising the environment, and for process steering via (bio)chemical transformations by water organisms, whether this is in a water treatment system, in a cultivation system, or in a natural ecosystem. AE3 works in the field of applied aquatic ecology where technology meets ecology. With a thorough knowledge of ecological relations and processes, aquatic physics and -chemistry, AE3 offers solutions at a technical scale e.g., in combined cultivation (saline crops, seafood, waste treatment) systems and in phyto-remediation, as well as at a natural scale in water management. TO WHOM MAY AE3 BE OF INTEREST?  In principle for any user who wishes to treat process water for re-use and to utilise the eliminated residuals, or who wishes to optimise the functioning of aquatic ecosystems. Just contact AE3, and together we can analyse the problem and seek a tailor-made solution - for users in: agriculture; horticulture; aquaculture; bio-industry; ecological building; inhabitants of rural areas; water authorities and municipalities. Activities of AE3: A simulation model for the restoration of the polluted Jeddah lagoons; Ideas for the future of the IJsselmeer, Afsluitdijk and Wadden Sea; Education of water management students (e.g. aquatic ecology and algal culturing); Microscopic analyses of algae and other small organisms in various water types; Bio-assays with algae to screen natural water as growth media (e.g. groundwater); Effects of ultrasonic devices on plankton; Stack-FBR: a periphyton reactor produces compact, edible biomass and clean water; The focus of AE3 is on two aspects: ENVIRONMENTAL ENGINEERING In perturbed aquatic ecosystems, to modify environmental factors such, that a shift towards a more stable ecosystem will be established. This is possible via a set of measures whereby hydrodynamics, physics, chemistry and ecology are combined in order to install a new long-term equilibrium; one could think of measures to be taken according to the EU water framework directive. ECOLOGICAL ENGINEERING  In artificial environments with ‘used’ water, to optimise biological processes and ecological interactions between water organisms, e.g. by separation of utile biomass and clean water. AE3 offers ecological engineering, to help creating water cycles in freshwater, brackish and marine (reactor) systems; residuals may turn into valuable products e.g., food or fertilizer, either used by yourself or by others; AE3 helps to find potential users of these residuals. AE3 cannot work miracles: if residuals in the treated water are not degradable, phyto-remediation may be the answer; harmful residuals are stored in algae or water plants, and the biomass is then safely destructed or immobilised (textile, paper, ...).
